Now Hiring: Worship Musician

Updated: Nov 1, 2022

St. Philip Lutheran Church, Glenview

Worship Musician

Description and Background:

St. Philip Lutheran Church in Glenview seeks a musician to lead congregational song at its Sunday morning worship service (9:00 a.m.), as well as periodic additional services throughout the year (e.g., Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, etc.). St. Philip is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and is also a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) congregation committed to the full inclusion of persons of all gender identities and expressions, sexual orientations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, ages, and abilities.

The musician leads the liturgy from either the piano or organ and also serves as cantor for select sung portions of the liturgy (such as the psalm). The congregation primarily sings traditional hymns, along with other songs in a variety of styles. The musician shares worship planning with the pastor and reports directly to them. Congregational hymns, songs, and liturgical settings are typically chosen by the pastor, and appropriate instrumental pieces (prelude, postlude, music during offering collection and communion distribution) are chosen by the musician.

Desired Qualifications and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in music, preferably keyboard, or equivalent experience

  • Church music experience in a traditional liturgical setting

  • Familiarity with ELCA Lutheran liturgical resources, including Evangelical Lutheran Worship and All Creation Sings

  • Comfortability in leading a variety of musical styles

  • Collaborative, interpersonal skills and regular communication with fellow ministry staff

  • A shared commitment to welcome and inclusion, expressed in the mission of the congregation and its worship life

Time commitment: approx. 1 hour for the worship service itself, plus additional rehearsal time, as needed

Position available: January 8, 2023

Compensation: $200 per service. (Accompaniment and other musical resources are also provided in the St. Philip music library, and there is a small budget for the purchase of additional resources, sheet music, etc. at the discretion of the musician.)

To apply: Please submit a cover letter and resume to Pastor Josh Evans at pastor@stphilipglenview.org. Hymn recordings, including recent church services, are also welcome but not required. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until position is filled.
